the forecast heavy rain waited to arrive until after the junior races
had finished but some thick mud in places especially on the hill made
the running tough on this short, fast course. Well done to all.

Shirley reports.... Harry Maslen was selected to represent England at
the U20 Decathlon Home Internationals held at Hexham over the weekend.
As a result of sound winter training Harry has shown brilliant form of
late and this was his final opportunity of the season to increase his
points total and rankings.
Unfortunately the weekend was generally wet and windy which although far
from ideal Harry was able to produce performances close to his best in
most events and had PB's on the second day in his 110m hurdles and pole
vault. Day 1 performances - 2nd, 100m 11.49; 4th, long jump 6m.61; 2nd,
shot 12m.35; 2nd, high jump 1m.88; 3rd, 400m 51.44. This gave him 2nd
place overall with 3551 points. The second day started strongly with 5th,
110m hurdles 15.42 (PB); 3rd, discus 34m.55; 3rd, pole vault
3m.90 (PB); 2nd, Javelin 45m.38; 6th, 1500m 4m.48.12. Competition for
podium places was close throughout the two days and going into the 1500m
Harry was lying in 2nd place overall by just one point to an exceptionally
fast runner. Harry's final points total was 6,646 which is a PB and puts
him 4th in the national rankings. Importantly he enjoyed the competition
and was exceptionally thrilled to be wearing an England vest and standing
on the podium in the bronze medal position. It was the most perfect conclusion
to a good season - an achievement recognised by UKA coaches in attendance.
Harry started athletics with junior Ilkley Harriers doing sportshall athletics
and has gradually progressed up through the track and field programme.
He has been the most talented and dedicated athlete we have ever seen
and I along with the rest of Ilkley Harriers wish him well as he continues
his training and studies in Texas, USA. We all hope that this has been
the first England vest of many.
7 juniors attended the third summer league meet of the season. (U15) Lauren Jackson, 5th long jump, 3m.06 and 6th 200m, 32.5; Emily Dover 7th 100m, 14.6, 4th 200m, 31.1 and 4th shot, 5m.94; (U13) Thomas Dover, 3rd shot, 5m.39, 4th 80m, 11.8 and 4th 200m, 31.1; Bernadette Raven, 2nd 800m, 3min.04.3 and 9th long jump, 2m.48; (U11) Rohan Smith, 2nd 75m, 11.2 and 3rd 600m, 1min.57.9; Max Ashelford, 8th 600m, 2 min.10.5; Thomas Campbell 6th 75m, 12.1, 9th 600m, 2 min.12.8 and 10th long jump, 2m.80.
Absolutely brilliant to have had 7 teams competing in these fun relays with many juniors racing in Ilkley colours for the first time. All the Ilkley teams were pretty equal, with two boys and two girls in each and with all the relevant age categories to be competitive. There were 15 teams racing on the night (1st were Otley in 32.12) and the Ilkley results were:
2nd (33.10): Tom Campbell (8.18), Max Ashelford (8.17), Robyn Anderson
(8.18), Caitlin Oddie (8.17)
3rd (33.30): Archie Budding (8.20), Eve Whitaker (8.20), Harrison Oddie
(7.48), Polly Crawley (9.02)
5th (34.49): Farrah Kennedy Harting (10.10), Ed McCarthy (8.39), Poppy
Anderson (7.52), Adam Townsend (8.08)
7th (35.42): Kingsley Richardson (8.39), Holly Fox (10.08), Oliver Holmes
(8.07), Emily Elmes (8.48)
8th (36.47): Dylan Carr (9.56), Evie Dennett (9.51), Tom Jackson (8.22),
Bernadette Raven (8.38)
9th (36.54): Tom Holmes (10.00), Lewis Carr (7.55), Alexis Whitaker (8.50),
Nina Pearce (10.09)
10th (37.59): Ciara Joel (10.58), Will Robson (10.09), Charlotte Elston
(8.50), Will Craske (8.02)
9 juniors attended the second summer league meet of the season. (U17) Roisin Ramage, 4th 100m, 14.2. (U15) Lauren Jackson, 9th long jump, 3m.28 and 10th 200m, 32.7; Emily Dover 7th 100m, 15.1 and 6th 200m, 31.2; Adam Cooke 4th Javelin, 27m.61, 6th long jump, 3m.90 and 2nd 80m hurdles, 14.00; Alex Booth 5th, long jump 4m.04; (U13) Thomas Dover, 2nd shot, 6m.05, 3rd 80m, 12.1 and 3rd 200m, 30.4; (U11) Rohan Smith, 3rd 75m, 11.3 and 2nd 600m, 1min.56.8; Caitlin Ramage, 6th 75m, 12.3 and 7th shot with 3m.56; Fergus Ramage, 2nd shot, 4m.68 and 22nd 75m, 14.8.
It was such a great honour for Ilkley Harriers to have 4 of its older juniors selected to compete for England in Bulgaria. Over the 3.6km ladies course Jemima Elgood was 23rd in 21.26, Lucy Haines, 37th in 22.44 and Sarah Pickering, 38th in 23.19. Jemima and Lucy were part of the England team placed 9th overall. There were 50 competitors in the race and the winning time was 18.50.
In the 5.4km mens race Ruaridh Mon Williams finished in 56th place in 30.44 (61 ran and winners time was 24.30).
Well done to all of them - everyone at Ilkley Harriers is very proud of your achievement.
Harry had been looking forward to this final Decathlon of the season competing for West Yorkshire at Doncaster in the ESSA regional qualifier. Unfortunately he was not well but the excellent training that he has been doing showed what a truely exceptional athlete he is even when not on par. On day 1 he ran 11.3 in the 100m jumped a PB of 6m.77 in the long jump, followed by a second PB of 13m.25 in the shot an outdoor PB of 1m.92 in the high jump and finished with a 53.3 in the 400m. He finished in the lead but overnight he was worse and despite travelling to Doncaster for the second day decided to withdraw from the competition. Over the next few years I am certain that we will hear of Harry's further successes.
6 juniors attended the first summer league meet of the season. (U17) Roisin Ramage, 1st Shot, 10m.44 and 4th 100m, 14.0. (U15) Lauren Jackson, 8th long jump, 3m.07 and 6th 200m, 33.2. Adam Cooke 3rd Javelin, 25m.06, 4th 100m, 13.2 and 1st 80m hurdles, 13.9. (U13) Tom Jackson, 1st 75m hurdles, 17.5, 8th 800m, 3min.04.9 and 7th 200m, 35.9. (U11) Rohan Smith, 1st in both 75m, 11,6 and 600m 1min.55.9. Caitlin Ramage, 1st 75m, 11.6 and 2nd shot with 4m.26,
A good little meet for Years 2-5, very friendly and well organised. Hopefully more will want to do this next season. Rohan Smith and Farrah Kennedy Harting were competing for the first time for JIH and they both did exceptionally well. Rohan won both the 600m in 1.56.4 (which is a new junior club record) and the 75m in 11.5 and was 4th in the long jump with 3m.30. Farrah ran the 150m in 28.1 and the 50m in 9.4 and threw the rounders ball 15m.60 which gave her third place and a bronze medal. It was good to see both of them on the podium. Well done.
George Elmes reports...... 13 JIH’s travelled up to picturesque
Malham to compete in round 5 of the championships. As always a very challenging
but enjoyable course for all. Probably our best collective results of
the championships with the standout performance being Jemima Elgood who
dominated the GU16 race to finish with a massive gap of 31 seconds in
front of the 2nd placed girl. Fantastic performance Jemima! Podium places
also for Ruaridh Mon Williams 2nd BU18, Lucy Haines 3rd GU16, and Poppy
Anderson 3rd GU12.

The great set of results meant that in the Club championships we moved
up from 4th to 2nd place out of 58 clubs competing. Last year we finished
in 4th place and our objective for this year was to improve once again
, something we have successfully achieved as a squad in every one of the
past 4 years. The last race in the Championships is the Turner uphill
Championships in the Lake District on Sat 20th June. This is the weekend
of the JIH camping “do” which will be held at Turner Hill
Farm Campsite (which is only 500m from the start of the race.) A number
of people are staying over and it would be great to get as many possible
to run the race and camp over to celebrate another successful year for
the entire Fell Squad. Thanks to all the JIH’s that have competed
in this year’s championships with great efforts from all , 4th last
year, currently in 2nd so let’s get as big a turnout as we can to
finish as strongly as we can.
Hope to see you in the lakes!
Harry Maslen competed in the England U20 Combined Events Championships
in Bedford over the weekend (decathlon).
On day 1 Harry achieved 3 personal best performances in the 100m (11.26);
shot (13m.15) and 400m (50.15) and with strong results in his long jump
(6m.53) and high jump (1m.88) he finish the day with 3688 points and 200
points clear of second place.
The second day started strong with a PB in his 110 Hurdles (15.45) and
a good discus (35m.19). Competing over two days and with 10 events there
are bound to be times when events go well while others are below par.
So along the way the athlete must contend with highs and lows and the
whole weekend becomes as much a test of character and attitude as personal
physical achievement. Pole Vault is normally an event that Harry would
expect to pick up 500-600 however failing to clear any height left him
with no chance of taking the championship title. Now back in 4th place
he ended the day by produced two of the most amazing performances of his
short career. In the javelin he threw 51m.89 (a PB by over 5m) and in
the 1500m he ran 4:38.98 (a PB by 16 secs). He finished the event with
6355 points and stood on the podium in silver medal position. He was also
crowned Northern Combined Events champion.
This was his first competitive decathlon of the season and showed that
all the winter training under the guidance of Sam Stanislaus is paying
off. Although clearly disappointed with a couple of aspects of his performance
he is already looking forward to other competitions to make amends. Many
congratulations on such an outstanding weekend.
Roisin Ramage (U15) and Charlie Wilde (U13) were competing for West Yorkshire. Roisin came 2nd in the shot with a PB of 10m.75 and helped WY to a 5th team place overall which is excellent. Charlie competed in the speed bounce.
Harry Maslen and Lucy Williamson (Both U20) competed in this first meet of the season. Lucy gained a PB in the 3,000m with 11.02.75 and also ran 800m in 2.33.72. Harry gained two PB's in 100m in 11.37 and Discus with 36m.09. He also threw a very good 45m.59 for the Javelin.
George Elmes reports...... Apologies slightly shorter report than normal
as I could not make it to the race.
14 JIH’s made it across to Meltham to take part in Round 3 of the
English champs which was also the Yorkshire champs. I am told that as
normal with Champs races the standard was high on a pretty technical course.
Some good results with Yorkshire medals for Lucy Williamson and Joanne
Williamson in the FU18 with Gold and silver respectively, Jemima Elgood
Silver FU16 & Euan Brennan MU14. Well done to all.
In the overall English Champs places -
MU10, Archie Budding 19th
FU10, Robyn Anderson 6th
MU12, Lewis Carr 14th, Harry Stead 38th
FU 12, Poppy Anderson 9th
MU14 Euan Brennan 3rd, Robbie Matthews 24th
FU14 Ella Shouler- Harris 23rd
FU16 Jemima Elgood 3rd, Sarah Pickering 9th, Lucy Jacques 13th, Nea Weston
22nd
FU18 Lucy Williamson 2nd, Joanne Williamson 4th.
In the Club champs we are still in 4th place 1 point behind Wharfedale
in 3rd and 2 behind Eden in 2nd.
Next round is a Coiners @ Mythomroyd Bank holiday Monday, lets again see
if we can break into the top 3. Its sooooo close! See you all there.
George reports... 12 JIH’s made it across the Pennines to compete
in round 2 of the FRA championships hosted by Clayton – le –
Moors. This was also the Lancashire championships and hence the competition
was pretty stiff.
As normal Pendle was a tough challenge with a steady climb out of the
bottom field for all. The majority all climbing to and beyond Buttock
Farm for their respective turns. Lucy and Joanne Williamson in the U18’s
continuing to the trig point 340m up. The weather held up, clear blue
sky with a decent breeze to cool all on the climb up overlooking the shimmering
Ogden Reservoir .
Some good results from all but standout performances from Jemima Elgood
and Sarah Pickering for first and second respectively in the GU16 race.

After 2 rounds in the club championship it is all very tight at the top
with JIH’s currently in 4th place on 281 points. Only 7 points separate
us from top spot - K&C 288, Eden Runners 285, Wharfedale 282, Ilkley
281.
Round 3 is hosted by Holmfirth Harriers on Sat 18th at West Nab near Huddesfield.
Its also the Yorkshire Championships so let’s see if we can get
a good turnout, get some good individual results and also push us into
one of the top 3 places in the club championships for the first time.
Harry Maslen won the event with sound performances in all 5 events.

Gaenor reports... There was some great running on Sunday by our junior
harriers at the last PECO race of the series. The course was well drained
and good running condition but the strong winds combined with an extremely
steep bank (which the year 7 to 12’s had to do twice) made it a
tough course.
It was a very strong race for Dom Coy, who was up leading with the race
winner throughout the race and missed out on the win by just 1 second.

Gaenor reports... Well done to the 10 junior who travelled down to London
to compete in the English National Cross Country Championships at Parliament
Hill Fields in Hampstead Heath. Despite a dry day the underfoot conditions
of the undulating course were extremely muddy in large parts, making the
running difficult.
Sarah Pickering and Elizabeth Westhead kicked off first with the under
17 women’s 5km race and a good Ilkley finish from Sarah who ran
strongly finishing just outside the top 50 in 52nd place.
Next up was Euan Brennan, Cameron Reilly and Francis Westhead running
in the 4.5km under 15 boys race.
A break for Ilkley juniors to watch Georgia Malir finish strongly in 11th
position in the 6km Junior women’s championship. Well done Georgia!
Next was the 3km under 13 girl’s race with Bethan Morley, Ella Shouler-Harris
and Charlotte Elston. There was a long wait then for Dominic and Nathan
Coy for the 3km under 13 boy’s race – the final junior race
of the day. Everybody ran extremely well in the ever increasing mud bath
within a very competitive field.
Thanks to Emily Elmes and family who although she was unable to run due
to continuing injuries gave fantastic support to all throughout the whole
day.

at Pontefract Racecourse in extremely muddy underfoot conditions. There
was some great running from everybody, especially Jemima Elgood who finished
in 21st in the U17 ladies. Top 50 finishes also from Lucy Williamson,
Bethan Morley and Max Bradley. A good team result once again from the
strong U17 ladies to finish 4th team.

Gaenor reports... Well done to all 27 Junior Harriers who ran on Saturday
at Light Water Valley. Underfoot conditions of the course were surprisingly
dry and fast but the strong winds made it tough going in open parts of
the race.
A big well done to Matthew Kenneth who ran very strongly to finish in
6th (U13 boy), therefore gaining his Yorkshire Vest.
Well done also to the U17 ladies team for getting the bronze team medal.

Not only were the best in the country competing but an England place was at stake for the first 3 finishers and the event incorporated the Northern Indoor Championships (22 U20's were competing). Harry Maslen has been getting stronger throughout the season and has had good winter training under the guidance of Sam Stanislaus who now coaches him in Gateshead. On Saturday he competed in the 60m (3rd fastest in 7.31 (PB)), long Jump (2nd in 6m 63 (PB)), shot (12th best in 11m 01) and pole vault (8th best in 3m.81 (PB)). This put him in 4th place with just 1 point adrift of 3rd. On the Sunday he competed in 60mHurdles (3rd in 8.58 (PB)), high jump (3rd in 1m 89) and the 1000m (3rd in 2.48.28 (PB)). It was a remarkable two days of competition. Harry finished in 4th place with 4943 points. His points total was incredibly high for someone not to make it on to the podium however it was a great achievement and one that he can be massively proud of. His friend and training partner from Gateshead (Anthony Hogg) won the competition breaking the 5000 point barrier and I am sure that over the coming year they'll push each other in training and competition. Harry gained a silver medal as runner up to Anthony in the Northern Championships and has been selected as a non travelling reserve for the GB and NI team in the U23 20 International indoor match combined events in Nogent-sur-oise, France on the 24/25 January.
