From Steve Turland…
Pleased to report that I managed to complete the Dragons Back Race last week. Extended by an extra day from previous races, this is a six-day mountain race, 240 miles down the length of Wales from Conwy Castle in the north, to Cardiff Castle in the south, with a total ascent of around 60,000ft. There are three (reasonably tight) cut off times each day which you have to meet to stay in the race. The hot weather on the first couple of days really took its toll – from the 400 runners who started the race, two thirds of the field had either retired or missed the cut offs by the end of day two, with only 90 runners eventually making it to the finish line in Cardiff. I managed to finish in 74th overall in a total time of 82 hrs 40 mins. A tough race, but the most amazing experience through the mountains of Wales and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
