From Nick Kealey…
The Withins Skyline is one of the classics in the Wharfedale Harriers autumn series: a 10km (6.2-mile) fell race with around 820ft of climbing, starting and finishing at Penistone Hill Country Park above Haworth. The route takes in The Stoop, Top Withins and Brontë Bridge, serving up a fine mix of bogs, moorland trails, stone flags and spectacular views.
Usually, a visit to Penistone Hill Country Park comes with freezing temperatures, horizontal rain and questionable life choices. This year, however, runners were greeted by glorious sunshine and surprisingly mild conditions.
With injuries and other races distracting many of our usual contenders, rival clubs were doubtless delighted to discover that the Harriers’ big guns were absent and their trophy cabinets temporarily safe. Just four intrepid Harriers made the trip to Haworth, all greedily eyeing up points for the race league.
I started brightly enough, even managing to keep Rob Green behind me for the first mile or so. Sadly, that success was short-lived. Once the long, boggy climb up to The Stoop arrived, Rob cruised past and disappeared into the distance with the ease of a man who had either eaten his Weetabix or left his kids with their grandparents.
The route offered plenty of entertainment: slippery stone flags, technical descents and enough junctions shared with neighbouring fell races to keep runners wondering whether they were still on the right course. Spectators appeared to have flocked to the stream crossing near Brontë Bridge, although in truth they were probably just enjoying a Sunday stroll to the Brontë Waterfall.
A final climb brought runners back towards Haworth and the welcome sight of West End Cricket Club, the finish line and the true reward for all fell runners: a cup of tea and a Rich Tea biscuit.
How all fell races should finish.
