February 2012 – Nick Spencer
Nick is an ex High Jumper and parent who for the last two/three years has coached a group of juniors on a Tuesday at Ghyll Royd School. As a club we are indebted to his commitment and enthusiasm to give juniors in Wharfedale the opportunity to do an activity that they might not otherwise get to do. Most of these juniors compete at high jump for their schools and are now beginning to have the confidence to compete at club level as well.
January 2012 – Henry Websdale

award for her commitment to coaching and in the words of Rachel Websdale....
'Naomi really stands out for me as someone who is always willing to help.
She helped me at the Junior schools x country managing the results and

!'
May 2011 – Sally Judkowski
Sally has been coaching with us for 4 years with the Monday Sportshall Athletics group and the specific Tuesday jumps group. Over the years her commitment to the Track & Field teams has been fantastic and has team managed right from the early days of the Young Athletes League with Bradford Airedale. Not only is she a taxi service to Daniel and Zoe with all the other activities they do but as a coach is our Pole Vault specialist.
March 2011 - Dwayne Heard
Dwayne is a Level 1 coach who started with us 3 or 4 years ago on a Thursday night with the 8 to 10 year sportshall athletics group. He now coaches long and triple jump to the specific jumps group on a Tuesday at Ghyll Royd School. Dwayne is an ex- international junior long jumper and his claim to fame is that he once beat Jonathon Edwards. Over the past couple of years we have seen a marked improvement in the standard of our long jumpers in competition due to Dwayne's work with the group
February 2011- Alison Bennett
Alison is a Level 1 coach and has been coaching the juniors since we first started at Clevedon, so this is definitely a long service award! Over the years she has had a great involvement with the junior section and much of what we are doing now is due to Alison's input. She is currently coaching sportshall athletics to the 11 to 15 year group on a Monday but also helps at every event that we organise and has also taken charge of the XC teams in the past.
January 2011 - John Burrows
John is a Level 2 coach and is Sally Malir's dad. In his youth he competed in the Decathlon so has an all round knowledge about most athletics events. However John's specialism is the throwing events (and in particular the Discus) which is brilliant because none of us like the throwing events very much. He has been coaching in the junior section for the past 3 years starting with the general coaching 11 to 15 year group on a Monday but now concentrates on the Tuesday specific throws group at Ghyll Royd. He attends the Coach development sessions in Sheffield and Leeds and his experience and expertise in this area has made a big difference to the athletes.
November 2010 - Sally Malir
Sally has been helping in the junior section for a couple of years now coaching on a Monday with the 11 to 15 year olds doing Sportshall Athletics and in the summer months helping on a Tuesday at the specific Track & Field session. She is also a regular attender of the Saturday Family Fell run. However Sally has gained this award for Team Managing not only 'team Malir' but also the junior cross-country teams as well as being there for the track & field teams.
October 2010 - Max Greaves
When we set up Ilkley Sportshall Athletics back in 2002 Max was our youngest junior at 7. I think it is fair to say that Max's attention span in those days was not great and he definitely kept the coaches on their toes. Max did 8 years of Sportshall Athletics before 'graduating' out of the sessions last Easter and although does not hold any coaching qualifications due to his age has been a junior helper on a Thursday for the last 18 months. He helps to set up for the session, coaches during the sessions when required and is generally a fantastic help. Back in 2002 I don't think any of us would have predicted such an outcome.
September 2010 - Ian Marshall
Ian is a Level 2 coach and has been coaching for 3 or 4 years in the junior section. He started with the Thursday 8 to 10 year old Sportshall Athletics sessions but has been coaching the 11-15 year olds on a Monday for the last two years. A regular at the Saturday morning Family Fell Run and leads this session when Neil is unavailable.
July 2010 - Rachel Websdale
Rachel has been coaching with us for a couple of years having gained her level 1 back in spring 2008 and is CRB checked. Always willing to help out at any of the events we organise she (along with Bryan) undertook the organising of the Junior Trail races when they were introduced and has just taken over the role of organising the All Saints Cross-Country races which are a part of the Wharfedale League. In the summer she (along with Shirley and Ros) ran the athletics activity at the IGS Transition day and this autumn she is coaching a sportshall athletics session on a Thursday and helping with the Wednesday speed/endurance group. Rachel’s own words on receiving her award were ‘thank you for the coach of the month award, though as you will know I do it for the love of it. I get so much enjoyment from being with the kids and I am so proud to belong to such a vibrant club’.
June 2010 - Malcolm Pickering
Malcolm is a relative newcomer to our coaching team having been with us for the past 4 years. He is a Level 2 coach currently coaching Sportshall Athletics and outdoor athletics to 11 to 15 year olds on a Monday as well as jointly leading the speed/endurance session for 8 to 16 year olds at ILT&SC with Ros on a Wednesday. He is also on stand by on a Saturday for the ‘Family’ Fell run and is usually up the front fighting it out with David Westhead and Dave Cummings and showing the juniors what it’s like to train hard. He holds his Child Protection and First Aid qualifications and has attended a risk assessment course. His role within the juniors also includes promoting the Fell discipline and this year he has undertaken the task of organising social trips for the juniors with Sally.
May 2010 - Neil Chapman
Neil has been involved with the junior section right from the start having set up Ilkley Sportshall Athletics with Shirley in 2002 and much of the way that the junior section has developed is due to Neil. He is a Level 2 coach, holding Child Protection and Emergency Aid qualifications and is responsible for the CRB verification within Ilkley Harriers and promoting the ‘Transition’ stage for 15 year olds into the senior section. He has also attended a risk assessment course. He leads the Saturday ‘Family’ Fell run (having already done his own training session first) and coaches at a number of senior sessions. Although he no longer coaches regularly at a junior session he does make guest appearances when we coach the hammer and is on stand by if needed. At events that we organise Neil works on the finish team as the race timer and his role within the juniors also extends to being in charge of the Race programme and promoting the road/terrain discipline.
April 2010 - Emily Wood
Emily was also at the very first session at Clevedon House School in September 2002, but as she was only 10 years old it was from the other side of the fence. Emily used to help set up all the sportshall athletics equipment and has been helping at Fell and XC events from the very start. She is a Level 1 coach and endurance official, an Emergency Aider and impressively knows most of the juniors by name. Over the past 4 years she has coached a two hour session on a Thursday and since January a two hour session on a Monday as well. In addition she helps on registration and results at all of the Woodentops Fell races at Haworth. She will be sorely missed when she goes off to university in September.
March 2010 - Ros Blackburn
Ros is the very first recipient of this award. She has been coaching juniors since the very first session at Clevedon House School in September 2002 and much of the way that the junior section has developed is due to Ros's involvement over the years. She is a Level 2 coach and an endurance official, holds her Child protection and Emergency Aid qualifications and is responsible for maintaining the club data base of coach/officials details. She is also Ilkley Harriers U18 Welfare Officer. Along with Malcolm she runs the Wednesday evening speed/endurance sessions at the Tennis Club and coaches a two hour session on Thursday’s and is on Monday ‘stand by’ if needed. A regular at all the events that we organise on the registration & results team and helps to run the Ilkley Grammar School Transition day in the summer term. Ros was presented with her Dobson & Robinson vouchers by Katie Jones from England Athletics at the awards evening in March.
