From Alison Bennett…
Despite media attention being focused on another sport, in another country, a large contingent of Ilkley Harriers converged at Harrogate Hockey Club HQ for the second race in the league. Hosted by Nidd Valley Road Runners, this 9.6km course posed a footwear conundrum as it contained a variety of running surfaces from grassy fields, tarmac, ploughed fields and woodland. Shortly before the start of the race, the sun broke through the clouds ensuring a rather warm and sticky run.
Matthew Thackwray was a clear winner with a lead of over a minute on Otley’s Adam Stanley followed by Matt Newell in 3rd place. Nick Kealey finished 10th. Jonathan Turner was 1st in his age-group category. Sally, Gaenor and Alison were the first 3 Ilkley ladies to finish. However, this series is also about taking part at all levels and club camaraderie. It was great to see so many red and green vests flowing through the finish then heading off to mingle and enjoy a well-deserved, ample supper with team mates and other club runners.
