This was a family affair for us, with Sarah and I running the marathon and two of our children, Daniel (who now lives in Edinburgh) and Lucy running the half marathon. In the days leading up to Sunday we’d been keeping an anxious eye on the BBC weather app. Fortunately, the lightning strikes didn’t happen. But the predicted torrential rain and a headwind for much of the course proved accurate. The fabulous crowds still turned out in force with their placards, whistles and the occasional bagpipes. As much of the route is along the coast, I’d had a romantic notion of taking a swim in the sea at the end. As it was, I felt freezing cold and soaking wet anyway, so I gave the swim a miss!
