UTMB Julian Alps, Slovenia – Sun 21 Sept 2025

From Rebecca Mon-Williams…

The Julian Alps UTMB race offers a smorgasbord of race options, ranging from 120km to 5km.  We opted for the 25km route which starts and finishes in the Alpine village of Kranskja Gora. Our route took in 3 main climbs (1000m total), and followed tracks along rivers, up wooded hillsides, along tops with glorious views of the stunning Julian Alps, and down grassy ski slopes. Underfoot was a mixture of tarmac (short sections), easy and technical trails, grassy slopes.

It’s a five star Trip review for the Julian Alps and Slovenia from us. The race gets four stars with one star lost due to the “wave” system (two staggered starts), which means if you want to race for a podium position (done on gun time), you’ve got 15 min to make up and a lot of people to overtake on some of the bottlenecks. We managed to argue for Ruaridh to be moved, but it took some persuasion. However, for those of us without those heady aspirations and in holiday mood, it’s actually quite nice to have a little breather, look up, and enjoy the views.
