Quarter Everest up and down UK womens FKT – Fri 8 Sep

From Jann Smith…

8808 feet ascending and descending / 7.16 miles / 48% gradient / 4hr 42 mins / Steel Fell, Lake District

Everesting is a relatively new concept very popular with cyclists . Choose a hill then go up and down the same path non-stop. The steeper the hill the less the mileage… but it’s a lot harder on the legs, especially the descending! You need to do full repeats up and down so I hit the quarter Everest of 7257ft just after I’d started the 9th repetition of the Mountain so this added an extra 30 mins to the time. I chose Steel Fell in the Lake District which has quite a lot of loose rock and scree and is fiercely steep at 48% gradient, it was also one of the hottest days of the year which wasn’t ideal so I decided to stop after 10 repeats and 9000 ft, I decided with hindsight a less steep and less technical hill would be easier on the legs!
