A popular fixture in the summer calendar, especially for those wanting to get a mid-week race under their belt, the Otley 10-mile road race took place this week, celebrating it’s 40th anniversary. The race starts and finishes at Otley Cricket Club, with a grandstand finish, barbecue, prize giving, and a great friendly atmosphere.
Eight Harriers lined up on the start line, all a bit nervous due to the unexpected rise in temperatures compared to a few days previously. The hilly route goes out to Pool in Wharfedale, over the bridge, climbs up to Leathley, with an added hilly loop at the top, before going on to Farnley, with still more undulations to contend with. After Farnley the route flattens and the downhill finish back to Otley is very welcome, especially as it was a complete slog going up the hills in the heat!
There were some great results despite the challenging conditions! Edwyn Oliver Edwards was the first Harrier over the line in a speedy 1:11:08. He was followed by Tony Pye, in 1:14:20, his time even more impressive as he had run the Pete Shields 10km just 3 days previously. Hot on his heels was Rachel Carter, who finished 8th lady overall and took first prize in her age category. Lovely to meet Luke Greenwood, Jeremy’s son who enjoyed his first go at this race, and had an excellent result. Great runs also by Martin Stubbs, Marc Westerman and Jeremy Greenwood. I brought up the rear of the Harriers contingent, but I was very pleased to finish 2nd in my age category, a rare occurrence!
