LDWA-organised ‘One Foot in the Gargrave’ offers runners and walkers a Challenge event (as opposed to a race – think Rombald’s Stride) with pre-event tea/coffee/toast, 4 well-stocked checkpoints, post-event meal and a super friendly team.
The 22-something mile route starts along quiet lanes out of Gargrave towards Otterburn, climbing gently before dropping down to the Grade 1 listed, millstone grit Church at Kirkby Malham – thought to have originated no later than the 9th century, it was completely rebuilt in the 15th century and is absolutely beautiful. Climbing again, up green lanes the route approaches Malham before turning towards Janet’s Foss and then a near 500ft slog up to the top corner of Mastiles Lane, where a bounty of sandwiches, cakes and tea, coffee and juice awaited. From this roughly halfway point the rest is fairly easy running, undulating but generally downhill with 360 degree glorious views. Finishing with a short stint along the Canal and back to HQ – a grand morning out with Nuno / Becca Cesar de Sa and lovely to see Adela Reperecki also enjoying the sunshine and scenery.
I haven’t seen any results but they don’t seem very important. For more events see https://ldwa.org.uk/WestYorkshire
