Myself and my two boys headed off for Kirkby (in Furness) Gala on Saturday for the latest BOFRA race. In contrast to the recent short steep up-and-down type of BOFRAs of recent weeks (Kettlewell, Hawkswick Dash) Kirkby offered a slightly longer runable out-and-back course (except for wall jumping to get out of the gala field and a few stiles and squeezes) to a wind turbine on the fell with views across to the southern fells of the Lake District and the Irish sea. Kirkby’s a small place (I’d not heard of it before) but puts on a great family gala. Worth knowing for next year is that you can make a weekend of it by camping in the gala field as a BOFRA member.
