When last at a Due North event
I wasn’t feeling one hundred percent
I was not in the zone
And did nothing but moan
Up the hills and down every descent
So today for the Kettlewell run
I decided to just have some fun
The first up was quite tough
And the down was quite rough
But by climb two the fun had begun!
The views from the top were outstanding
Looking down at my feet notwithstanding
But the run from climb two
Gave me time to renew
And was honestly quite heart expanding!
We’ll skip over the last “little” hill
Which made me a grumpier Jill
But once over the line
And feeling just fine
I can honestly say IT WAS BRILL!

This was my first experience of a Due North Event – this was part of a series of 3 Trail (roughly) Half Marathons at Burnsall, Kettlewell and Skipton between April and September. They’re not cheap (certainly not compared
with some of our own fab races) but at £34 each are in-line with most commercially-run ones these days. The differentiator was the absolutely cracking route, in some of the prettiest spots in the Yorkshire Dales. The course takes you along Littondale by the side of the River Skirfare to Arncliffe, then a tough climb up and over Old Cote Moor to Starbotton. Through pretty pastures to the north end of Kettlewell and then up on a loop towards Conistone Moor before the most wonderful grassy descent and views, dropping into a small woodland and a stretch along the road back to Kettlewell. A final sting-in-the-tail climb on tired legs then drops you back to the finish field for a well earned pie and a goodie bag including obligatory beer. Friendly race, beautiful views, that great feeling of post-race satisfaction, and home by 2pm. What’s not to like?
