From Dave Robson…
This time of year always provides plenty of short, midweek fell race opportunities. Kettlewell Anniversary Fell Race is a good example. It’s only 5 miles but crams in 550metres of climbing, by sending you up and over a rocky ridge and then back again. To my knowledge this is the only fell race to include the optional carrying of inflatable sharks for the first male and female runner to the top the initial climb. Taking them all the way to the finish, bags you a bottle of gin.
This year, just before the start, we were treated to a sudden downpour, which made the grassy tracks slippery and my choice of trail shoes the wrong choice.
Sam Bentham was the only other Ilkley Harriers present. He flew round the course in less than 38 mins to take the win (I’m not sure if a shark was involved).
I was happy with a pb which gave me 21st place and 1st M50.
Perhaps next year additional inflatable fish species could be added for each age category?
