It was a great privilege for myself and Helen Waddington to be selected for the England 5K teams in the Masters event in Tenby.
A fine morning found us proudly sporting our new England attire ready to enjoy the event. At the crowded start in the centre of Tenby we were surrounded by a mass of unfamiliar faces but soon bonded with fellow team mates recognizable by their Home Country vest. Before long we were cheered on our way by the assembled crowds and loud motivational music as we headed out of the town on an undulating course.
Being a 5k, it wasn’t a long race, but it was still a relief to run down the red carpet towards the finish knowing that we had given our best effort.
The less said the better regarding the combination of confusing signage and lack of directions which caused many of the lead runners to approach the finish funnel from opposing directions.
Ilkley is a club with a great strength and depth of Veteran runners at all distances, many of who could qualify for selection for similar events. It would be great if we could aim to have a larger Ilkley contingent at one of the Masters races in the future.
