More Harriers of the Month ...
Well done to our junior fell runners who are now FOURTH nationally in the fell Championships. Full report on the junior pages.
From Will Buckton... I headed to the Lakes for the first time in a while to take part in the first race in the Lakeland Classics 2014. The spectacular route, starting from Seathwaite, takes in 29km and 1830m ascent including the summits of Little Stand and Swirl How. I finished 26th in 3h38:37. Simon Harding of Macclesfield won the race in 3h00:12.

Lots of good reports on our eighth Ilkley Trail Race (just see the Twitter feed), well done to Lawrence and the team. There was a very good turnout of Harriers in the biggest field since 2009.
Will Buckton reports ... Tom Adams recorded a sixth successive Ilkley Trail Race victory, beating his own 2011 record in wet and muddy conditions. Tom galloped to victory, leaving a gap of almost six minutes to second placed runner Gareth Hird of Wharfedale. Martin Archer returned from a lengthy injury in a blaze of glory, finishing 5th and helping Ilkley to the team prize.
This was a counter in the Ilkley Harriers Race League.
From Rachel Websdale ... A huge thank you to all the helpers and marshalls who made the junior races possible. A record turn out of over 100 children. It seems kids just love running in the mud and every child who finished a winner with extra prizes for the muddiest ! Apologies to all those parents faced with very dirty kit - it was worth it to see all the smiling faces.

From Pete Shields ... well done Nicky Green another great result 2-57.09, 5th lady at Edinburgh Marathon
From Clare Smith Neil and I completed the LDWA annual 100 mile event this weekend in the valleys of South Wales, coming in 42nd out of 255 finishers after 33 hours and 39 minutes. Weather and underfoot conditions were dreadful and I understand that at least half of the 487 starters retired, so I was just pleased to finish!
Petra Bijsterveld reports ... Alex Hirst continues his excellent parkrunning in Lewisham and came second this week. Skipton saw a number of Harriers running very well this week, including all 3 Williamson ladies on their very first parkrun, with Lucy coming home as 1st female! Results ...

From Adela Reperecki ... I took part in this local event organised by Horsforth Harriers which started and finished at Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Bridge. The run was just over 5 miles (route was shorter than normal due to work on the canal path). A scenic and undulating route on road, paths and tracks. I was the only red and green to be seen and came in at 41:39

In the U18 race Lucy Williamson gained a Yorkshire vest; in U16 Lucy Haines finished 5th as part of the Golden Yorkshire team, with Jemima Elgood just behind; and Ruaridh Mon-Williams had a good result 12th in the U16 men's race. From Petra Bijsterveld ...
Five Harriers, all women, traveled to Ripon this morning for the 10 miler. A very scenic but hilly course taking you around Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey, mainly on good trails and minor roads. It was very tough going in the heat and I was substantially slower than last year, but some of the more intrepid runners were not so easily put off and achieved good finishing times.
I would recommend this race, and the tea and home-made cakes at the pavilion are a real bonus at the end.

From Brian Melia ... Jamie Hutchinson and I set off once again for the Old County Tops. 37 miles and 10000 feet of ascent. It caters for pairs running as all male, mixed or all female. Fabulous weather made it even more exciting. The atmosphere at the start is really special. The route is a beautiful one taking in Helvellyn summit then a steep run down to Wythburn car park for tea and sandwiches. A trot up the valley follows under Raise then to Angle Tarn leading to Scafell Pike, which was very hot. Then the most exciting bit dropping off the top down some buttresses and steep narrow paths to the valley leading to Cockley Beck. We changed our route this year as some Keswick runners looked like they had something up their sleeves, so we pursued on an excellent trail to lovely cheese and pickle sandwiches, homemade cakes, tea etc. A superb pit stop! The final climb is tough, but we stuck together to the Old Man then after a rest headed the final few miles home. We both had problems, but the event way outweighs most things and the finish is a really special place to be, very low key, just fell runners in their new T shirts. We completed it in just over 9 hrs 30 ish, I believe and about 35th team. Fastest time was 8 hrs. Great day

From Fiona Schneider ... Well! That was a first. Not a half marathon or a Leeds half marathon but sitting on a pavement mid race for 25 min attending a collapsed lady until the ambulance arrived. The paramedic was great but took about 15 min to arrive so it was fortunate poorly lady from Leeds was feeling a lot better by then. In my head I had abandoned my own running at this 8.5 mile stage. (I was heading for the wrong side of 2 hr with 63 min on my clock at half way.) But of course, no-one was going to give me a lift. So ensuring the lady was recovering in expert hands I set off again. Running did not flow easily at first but then I got it! I was doing what I had never done! Reel in nearly every runner on the road! I could get to like that!

Dave Wilby reports ... The long and lonely search for some half decent racing form took me to a wet & windy Lake District on Saturday, for one of the best races in the calendar. Buttermere Sailbeck was back on following a 2 year hiatus, and a very hard course was complemented by some tough weather on the higher tops. After a long grassy ascent to the first CP at Ard Crags, and a steep technical drop off and down the valley, the crux of the race is the unrelenting ascent up the side of Causey Pike. There follows a glorious ridge run over Sail & up to Ill Crag, before a tricky line in thick mist around to Whiteless Pike. A few missed the contour and went straight on to Grasmoor, but I was fortunate enough not to join them and so picked up the odd unseen place before the final headlong dash all the way off back in to Buttermere. I didnt quite have the legs to mix it up with the Lakes based runners but I was pleased to get a 4min PB and finish 12th in a good quality field of 100 finishers. Results

Nick Pearce's time beats his own V60 Club record of 19:11, set at John Carr last year.
From Ben Sheppard ... I didn't spot any other Ilkley Harriers through the rain in Lothersdale for this 3.6 mile, 600ft climb category BS race. The going was heavy and a headwind made a struggle of the climb up, in contrast to last year's blinding sunshine. Tenth at the turn, despite descending skills that owe more to Kenny Everett than Kenny Stuart and displaying all the elan of a runaway bath in a scene from Last of the Summer Wine, I out-hurtled two James Herriotts (Wharfedale vets) to finish 8th in a little under 28 minutes, half a minute slower than than last year but fourteen places nearer the front. Seemingly it pays to race in dreary weather. Results ...

From Jim Ryder ... The senior Coiners race was run outright by Katie Walshaw, Holmfirth Harriers, 54:48. I came in 24th in 1:00.59. 127 ran. A great route up and around Stoodley Pike, with a friendly atmosphere and great views.

Petra Bijsterveld reports ... I was alerted to the existence of this race last year by Dave Wilby's report. He said he'd hated almost every step and that sentence resounded in my head as I went round this morning. I cannot say I enjoyed the process much either. I had entered this race to try and break the 2 hour barrier, having failed by 13 seconds last year on a flat course in Holland. Today I did set off too fast, got to the half way point in 57 minutes and struggled considerably in the 2nd half. I pushed on as the thought of 'having' to enter another flat road HM was just too much to bear, and achieved my goal! I would recommend this race to anyone wanting to achieve a fast time. The event, now in its third year, is supremely well organized, completely traffic-free, with lots of water stations, a jelly bean station (!) and much general support along the route, and a nice finish inside Scunthorpe FC stadium. I did not see any other Harriers there or in the results ...
