From Jo Foster…
Jim and I spent an enjoyable couple of days in Dufton taking the opportunity to run this 15km race. Normally taking place in February but moved due to a waterlogged parking field, the organisers decided to put it on the same weekend as Dufton Show ( if you were really enthusiastic you could also do Dufton Pike race on the Saturday!).
It was pretty warm as we set off at 1 pm and I settled steadily into the climb which, once it left the road, passed through mixed terrain including bog and a surprisingly deep stream crossing. The steep climb of the Nick was eased a bit by the spectacular scenery and after a steep scramble we topped out and there was a ‘wow’ moment if you took a moment to take in the stunning view. The route then skirted along the top and descended mainly on the Pennine Way and finally through fields.
My first fell race in quite a while (possibly this decade!), I was happy to finish comfortably within the 2.5 hr time limit and enjoyed the experience. It was really well marshalled and flagged throughout so navigational skills were able to lie dormant! I was even happier to tuck into the excellent quality cake and cuppa which was included for all runners.
A great friendly community event with all proceeds going to the village hall. I was also surprised to win a fiver as 3rd wv50!
