Hawkswick Dash – Sun 16 June

From Peter Roll…

After driving through a rain storm, Sunday turned out to be a fine & sunny day in Littondale for the short & steep Hawkswick Dash Fell Race. Only 1.4 miles/2.25km long but, a brutal 600ft/170 metres of climb.

It’s a proper family outing for Father’s Day, starting with the junior events, which follow a slightly truncated course.

First off were the under 9’s with junior Harrier, Isobel Moore 1st Girl home & Leyton Hudson in a creditable 15th. Then the under 12’s with Michael Moore 10th, followed by the under 14’s Joseph Bentham in 6th and under 17’s Oscar Shinn in 5th, George Whittlestone in 8th.

Finally the seniors race, now when they say 600ft/170 metres of climb, it is actually climbing as in on all fours scrambling up a precipitous fell, once you finally top out it’s a moorland trig over some walls, then a tumble down the hillside back home. Sam Bentham managed a thrilling overtake on the descent to bring home the win with Gawain Moore coming in 10th. A highly recommended day out.
