From Alison Bennett…
The heat was on for Midsummer’s Day and the third race in the Harrogate District Summer Race League, hosted by Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers. The location for the event was at Sutton Bank and the higher elevation with the hope of potentially cooler temperatures was what possibly drew 18 Ilkley Harriers to the start line.
This race is arguably the most scenic in the series with superb views throughout. The first 2 miles were along a straight undulating lane, where Matthew Thackwray soon opened a significant lead and could be seen disappearing into the distance. There followed a short footpath section before turning back for 2.3 miles along the well-maintained Cleveland Way trail.
It was a repeat of podium positions with Matthew Thackwray winning the race and Matt Newell in 3rd place. Harry Brook-Dobson, Alistair Brown and Iain Young were all in the top 30. Jonathan Turner was first in his age category. The ladies were represented by Alison Bennett, Diane Kitchen and Laura Dawes.
After the race, there was a sumptuous alfresco supper comprising stacks of sandwiches and masses of cake.
