Golden Ball 20 – Sun 31 Aug 2025

From Sally Armitage…

This weekend I was back over in Lancashire for the Golden Ball 20 ‘marathon prep’ race. Starting and finishing on a cycle track in Morecambe and following the River Lune, this race is fast and flat. Which was a good test for my dodgy knees ahead of entering an autumn marathon.

Having made the mistake at Trimpell 20, which follows the same course, of starting too far back, this time I started near the front. Which would have been great had I not dropped a gel twice in the first kilometre and had to battle back through the stampede to retrieve them! This also threw my carefully calculated pacing strategy out of the window, around the half way point I gave up on trying to follow a specific pace and just ran to feel, which turned out quite a bit faster than I’d planned anyway!

I had a great run, felt strong and comfortable throughout, and my knees only had a few complaints, so I guess I’ll be deciding which marathon to enter this autumn!
