From Michael Abrams-Cohen…
Ladies and gentlemen, gather ’round, for I have the honour of recounting the extraordinary adventures of Team Pool in Wharfedale and Kyle in the highly anticipated Golden Acre Relays! With 172 teams battling it out for glory, we knew we were in for a wild ride.
The day began with a mix of nerves and excitement. Rachel Barnicoat kicked off the shenanigans with leg 1, strutting her stuff like a gazelle in running shoes. She managed to finish her leg in 24 minutes and 14 seconds. But, I must say, her speed was so impressive that some spectators mistook her for a blur of neon!
Next in line was the one and only Kyle Bethel, an absolute force of nature on leg 2. With his luscious locks flowing in the wind, he zoomed through the course like a cheetah chasing its prey, finishing in a jaw-dropping 17 minutes and 36 seconds. It’s rumored that even a passing squirrel asked for his autograph!
And then, just when we thought things couldn’t get any wilder, along came Michael Abrams-Cohen, our last hope on leg 3. He emerged like a bat out of a cave, pushing the boundaries of speed and stamina. With a time of 16 minutes and 1 second, he secured our place in the history books (or at least on the race’s result sheet).
Throughout the race, the excitement and tension were palpable. We mustered all the energy we had, fueled by ridiculous motivational quotes and the promise of post-race snacks. We could see the finish line approaching and the cheers of the crowd urging us onward.
Alas, we crossed the finish line, our faces resembling ripe tomatoes, and with smiles that could light up the night. With a combined time of 57 minutes and 51 seconds, we placed 60th overall out of 172 teams. It may not have been a world record, but it certainly felt like one for our team!
And the icing on this laughter-filled cake? Our Team Pool in Wharfedale and Kyle clinched 11th place in the mixed team category out of 51 teams! We proudly accepted our honorary high-five from the race organizers and decided that running was indeed an excellent excuse for gathering friends and embracing fitness with a sprinkle of silliness.
As we celebrated our achievement, we couldn’t help but reflect on all the fun we had during the Golden Acre Relays. From Kyle’s epic hair toss mid-run to Michael’s victory dance at the finish line, we’ll forever cherish the memories of this unforgettable event.
To our fellow runners, congratulations on conquering the Golden Acre Relays! Whether you finished first, last, or somewhere in between, remember that the real victory is in the camaraderie and the countless laughs shared along the way.
