Dick Hudson’s Fell Race – Thu 29th July

From Bob Hamilton…

For the second time in two weeks, Oli Murphy chased the winner all the way home, again losing out by just a few agonising seconds. Holding the race in late July as opposed to April meant that the best line from the start (by the gate on the track up to White Wells) was more in doubt than usual, this year’s verdant crop of bracken having stolen away many of the usual trods. It must be a fascinating sight to see people disappearing up any number of different routes.

I originally instigated and organised this race in my days as a renegade wearing the white vest of Wharfedale. Being an unmarked out and back meant that it didn’t require much organisation, which was the general idea. It’s always odd to be running now, without any responsibility, very few people knowing of the history, and being able to enjoy the fact that all the pain being suffered out on the course is ultimately down to me! The course has never been faster, both men’s and ladies records being broken this year.
