The Addingham Gala is normally held in July but was moved forward this year to coincide with the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend. The fell race made a welcome return after absences due to COVID (2020 and 2021), in 2022 the Gala was not staged after the committee had spent all its available time and energy on the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. And being there again yesterday I was reminded what a tremendous effort it must be for the Gala committee, they did put on an excellent event for all the village and surrounding area. Helped by lovely sunny and warm weather the Gala field was filled with happy families taking part in traditional pursuits such as egg and spoon and three legged races, tug of war, and eating vast amounts of ice cream. Unfortunately the general enthusiasm did not quite translate into massive entry for the race, only 39 runners signed up to run the 6 mile route up to Beamsley Beacon and back, despite the wonderfully retro £1 entry fee.

The race was won by Andy Norman from Altrincham AC in 41:16 and Emma Clayton from Bingley Harriers in 46:23. Junior Harrier Sam Bentham led the Harriers home in second place.

Thanks to RD Jack Wood, summit team leader Neil Chapman, sweeper Hilda Coulsey and to all the marshals on the course and volunteers at the start/finish.
