From Helen Waddington…
Boston is the world’s oldest marathon and this year was the 126th event and the 50th anniversary of women being allowed to compete. It’s a difficult one to pace with an initial downhill at the start followed by 4 climbs from mile 16 onwards culminating in Heartbreak Hill at mile 20, so called because a previous runner in the race overtook the front runner giving him a consolatory pat on the back as he went past – you can imagine what happened next – a lesson in never counting your chickens before you’ve crossed the finish line . . . An incredible event with what felt like all of Boston pulling together to get behind this event of which they are rightly immensely proud.
