Complete Runner Race 4,Nunroyd Park, Guiseley, Sun 6th Dec

Report from Sally Malir...

This Sunday was the last of the Complete Runner Cross Country League races, held in Nunroyd Park Guiseley. Junior Ilkley Harriers had a great turn out of 17 runners producing fantastic results. Unfortunately one of the star runners, Tassy Heslop, for the under 11 girls was ill on the day, but the other under 11 girls ran hard ,in very muddy conditions, and were first team again, securing their first place in the league even after missing the last race due to a Wharfedale schools race commitment. The under 13 girls also had their best result of the season being 4th placed team, Rose Hagan having an especially good run.

This series has finished for another year and the final overall results have now been published, with Ilkley Harriers juniors producing some great performances.
In the under 11 girls category Sarah Pickering and Elizabeth Westhead finished joint 5th and Jess Burgess finishing 9th, as a team they were 1st.
In the under 13 girls category the team finished 6th overall, steadily improving as the races went on.
The under 13 boys team finished 4th overall.
This league is very competitive and all the runners from Ilkley that competed did fantastically well to produce the results they did. Many thanks to everyone who took part in any of the races and thank you to Sally Malir for team managing the juniors.

Peco League Cross-Country Junior Challenge Races,Hall Park, Horsforth, Sat 5th Dec

16 Junior Ilkley Harriers raced in the second event of the Peco Cross-Country League series at Hall Park, Horsforth on Saturday 5th December. In the 2 mile race 2nd Sam Hopkinson-Cook, 13.03; 3rd Sam Haggar, 13.09; 5th Jack Cummings, 13.49; 8th Lucy Williamson, 14.41; 9th Sam Wood, 14.43; 10th Rose Hagan, 14.45; 12th Scott Marshall, 15.48; 14th Isobel Hirst, 16.23; 16th Harriet Jackson, 17.08; 17th Joanne Williamson, 17.27 and 19th Anna Pickering, 22.05. In the 1 mile race 3rd Will Tench, 6.07; 4th Tom Cross, 6.11; 8th James Pickering, 6.51; 11th Alessandra Ricci, 7.02 and 15th Ella Taylor, 7.53. Well done to everyone who ran.

Complete Runner Race 3,Thornes Park,Wakefield,Sat 21st Nov

On Saturday 21 November, 11 Ilkley Harrier Juniors competed in the third Complete Runner Cross country race is the series at Thornes Park in Wakefield. The numbers were depleted as all the under 11 boys and girls were competing in the third Wharfedale League Schools cross country race.
Both the Under 13 girls and boys had a full team out and ran well to both finish 6th team in a very competitive event.

Peco League Cross-Country Junior Challenge Races,Golden Acre Park, Sun 8th Nov

Last year there was an 11 to 16 year old junior race for the first time and this year an 8 to 10 year old race has been introduced for the clubs within the league and juniors from the Bradford Network of clubs. The league is a closed league to certain local clubs. Ilkley Harriers had 22 juniors compete in the first event of the series at Golden Acre Park on Sunday. In the 1 mile Challenge race for 8 - 10 year olds Tom Cross was the outright winner in a time of 9.03, 3rd Sarah Pickering 9.39, 5th James Pickering 10.02, 9th Lucy Jacques 10.08, 13th Alessandra Ricci 11.03, 17th Jess Hirst 11.36 and 18th Alastair Clarke in 12.04.
The 2 mile Challenge race for 11 to 16 year olds was won by Matthew Smith from Abbey Runners in 11.51. Sam Hopkinson-Cook was 2nd in 12.44, 4th Jerome Martill 13.04, 5th Stephen Clarke 13.32, 6th Jack Cummings 13.42, 7th Sam Wood 13.57, 11th Rose Hagan 14.26, 12th Lucy Williamson 14.29, 13th max Beesley 14.48, 14th Tom Bennett 14.55, 15th Naomi Elliott 15.01, 17th Scott Marshall 15.10, 19th Isobel Hirst 15.42, 22nd Harriet Jackson 16.21, 26th Joanne Williamson 19.47 and 27th Anna Pickering in 22.28. Complete Runner Race 2, Boddington Hall, Leeds,Sun 1st Nov

Sunday 1st November saw the second in the Complete Runner Cross Country Series. This race was held at Boddington Hall, Leeds, in very wet and windy weather. Again Junior Ilkley Harriers had 22 runners who braved these awful conditions and produced fantastic results. The under 11 girls maintained their winning ways by taking gold podium position for the second time in a row. The other results were:

Withins Curly Wurly Fell Rat Runs, Sun 25th Oct

Six juniors raced in the Fell Rat Runs at a wet and windy Penistone Country Park, Haworth. First Harrier finishing in the 1 mile race in 28th place was Sam Haggar in 8.19, followed by Edward Bickerdike, 31st in 8.23, Sam Wood, 32nd in 8.25, 40th, Georgia Malir in 8.37, 68th Laura Harrison in 10.10 and 78th Rebecca Harrison in 11.26. Well done to everyone.

Complete Runner Race 1, Roils Head, Halifax, Sun 11th Oct

Sally Malir writes...... Ilkley Harriers had a fantastic turn out of 22 juniors for the first cross country Complete Runner League at Roils Head, Halifax. All the juniors ran brilliantly, but the stars of the day were the under 11s girl’s team who took first position, even though many of these girls had run in the first Wharfedale School’s League race the day before.

Harewood 2 mile race, 4th October

6 juniors ran in this 2 mile race. In order of finishing: 19th, Hannah Heslop, 3rd girl 11-12 in 14.27; 22nd, Georgia Malir, 4th girl 13-14 in 14.37; 23rd, Sam Haggar, 7th boy 13-14 in 14.38; 28th, Euan Brennan, 2nd boy 7-8 in 14.45; 29th, Tassy Heslop, 1st girl 9-10 in 15.01 and 78th, Emily Kerr, 2nd girl 15-16 in 18.26. Young Athletes League event 4, Cleckheaton, Sun 19th July

There might only have been 8 juniors competing at this event, but there were some absolutely fantastic individual results. Well done to everyone. Fiona Jordan (U17) won both of her races -300m Hurdles in 47.5 and the 200m in 28.0. Georgia Malir (U15) was 3rd in the Long Jump with 3m.86, 4th 1500m, 6.00.1 and 5th in the Shot with 5m.23. Daniel Judkowski (U15) was 2nd in the Long Jump with an outstanding 5m.27, and 3rd in both the Javelin, 26m.72 and Shot with 8m.11. U13 Girls: Naomi Elliott, 1st 70m Hurdles, 13.0, 2nd in both High Jump, 1m.25 and 800m, 2.47.6. Sophie Clarke, 2nd Long Jump, 3m.46, 4th, 150m in 24.5 and 5th 75m, 12.6. Grace Malir, 4th in both Long Jump, 3m.55 and 150m in 23.7 and 2nd 800m, 3.12.7. U13 Boys: Harry Maslen won the 75m Hurdles, 13.6 and Long Jump 4m.73 in the final jump of the competition and was 2nd in the High Jump, 1m.30. Thomas Kerr was 2nd in the Long Jump with 3m.63 and 3rd in both 100m 15.7 and 1500m 5.36.5.

U12's Charles Smith was 9th in 8.47 and Logan Hargreaves-Madhas was 18th in 9.58.

Meanwood Valley trail Junior Races, Sat 16th May

In the 1 mile 7 to 10 year old race the winner was Tomas Szajdzicki in a time of 7.05; 5th (and second girl) was Tassy Heslop in 7.42; 16th and 2nd boy 7-8 was Benjamin Kirkham in 8.28; 22nd, Adam Woodman (8.44); 25th, Toby Woodman (8.54) and Francesca Woodman was 31st in 9.33. In the 2 mile race for 11 to 16 year olds, Ruaridh Mon-Williams was 12th in 14.02; Georgia Malir 14th (and third girl 13-14) in 14.35 and 28th Grace Malir in 15.52.

Yorkshire Track & Field Championships, Sheffield,
Sat 9 May

Fiona Jordan is the new Yorkshire U17 300m Hurdle Champion having won her straight final in Sheffield in the Yorkshire Championships with a time of 49.23. This is a deserved reward for the work that she has put in during the winter months on her own, with Ilkley and with Roger Ingham of Skipton AC. A few weeks later she gained a bronze medal in the same event at the Northern Championships (48.40).

Lothersdale Fell Race, Wed 6 May

Malcolm Pickering reports ... A great turnout of 12 Ilkley juniors toed the line at the Lothersdale fell race. In the U/8 Logan Hargreaves-Madhas was 1st 3:45, and Evie Malir 1st girl, 4:48
In the U/10 race Charles Smith was 1st in 5:15, Sarah Pickering 4th overall and 1st girl, 5:56; Tassy Heslop 7th 6:21, James Pickering 11th, 6:37 and Jemima Elgood 15th 6:53
In the U/12's Jack Cummings was 4th in 14:22, Elizabeth Westhead 6th overall and 1st girl 15:37, Grace Malir 10th 17:06, and Anna Pickering 13th 21:45
With the U/14's running in the senior race, Sam Haggar ran a storming race finishing 62nd overall, 3rd in his age group in 32:59

English Championship Coiners fell Race, Monday 4th May

Well done to Logan Hargreaves-Madhas, 2nd in the U8 race in a time of 2.53. And to Tomas Szajzicki, 1st and new course record in the U10 race in 9.22, with Charles Smith not far behind in third place in 9.37.

Sportshall Athletics and Cross-Country Colours

At our presentation of awards we also gave Sportshall Athletics and Cross-Country Colours and Half Colours to a number of Junior Ilkley Harriers who have represented the club throughout the season. Bethany Pugh (U15), Elizabeth Heard, Daniel Judkowski, Chloe Tindale (all U13) and Laura Chapman, Francesca Fearnley, Ella Fitzpatrick, William Giles, Tassy Heslop, Ben Jarvis, Grace Malir, Gregory Smith, Joseph Tindall (all U11) were awarded full Sportshall Athletics Colours, with Joanna Snook, Ben & Adam Swinton (all U15), Bea Bradley, Anna Tench, Amy Donohue, Naomi Elliott, Harry Maslen, Mark Wilcock, Max Greaves, Ali Jordan (all U13) awarded their half colours. Cross-Country colours were awarded to Grace Malir, Harriet Jackson, Rose Hagan, Tassy Heslop, Elizabeth Westhead, Naomi Brown, Laura King, Lucy Williamson, Gregory Smith, William Giles, Ruaridh Mon-Williams, Thomas Kerr, Edward Bickerdike (all U11), Georgia Malir, Anna Sinclair, Tom Bennett, Jerome Martill, Harry Maslen, Jack Cummings (all U13), Sam Haggar and Stephen Clarke (both U15) and Jenny Dybeck (U17). Half colours were awarded to Chloe Slater (U11), Hannah Heslop, Bea Bradley, Anna Tench, Anna Pickering, Max Beesley, Henry Websdale (all U13), Sophie Latta, Lily Kitchen and Sam Wood (U15).

Norwich Union Sportshall Athletics Awards

We coach just over 130 children each week for Sportshall Athletics and at the end of March we presented Norwich Union Awards to them all. Since September the 11 to 15 year olds have been working towards their Level 3 Sportshall Athletics Heptathlon Award and the 8 to 11 year olds their Level 2 Agility Challenge Decathlon Award. Each year children gain more experience and standards continue to rise. This year we gave 2 Heptathlon gold medals to Bethany Pugh and Peter Linnegan and the four most improved athletes were Megan Ireton-Bourke, Amy Donohue, Anna Hellen and Dominic Ellis. For the younger children we presented 10 Decathlon gold medals to Laura Chapman, Ben Cheetham, Ewan Collier, Alice Edwards, William Giles, Rose Hagan, Tassy Heslop, Ben Jarvis, Phoebe Ogden and Gregory Smith. The four most improved athletes were Rose Hagan, Sarah Elliott, George Wilde and Roisin Ramage.

Pendle Winter Warm up, Sun 29 March

Well done to Zoe Judkowski, Tassy Heslop, Grace & Georgia Malir in this early season event. Zoe (U11) competed in the 75m (7th in 13.2), 150m (3rd in 26.4) and the Long Jump (2nd with 3m.21). Tassy (U11) competed in the 75m (6th in 13.0), 600m (2nd in 2.16.7) and the Long Jump (4th with 2m.84). Grace (U13) competed in the 200m (3rd in 33.6), 800m (5th in 2.55.9) and Long Jump (6th with 3m.19). Georgia (U15) competed in the 1500m (4th in 5.46.4).

National Sportshall Athletics Final,Birmingham, Sun 22 March.

Well done to the 4 Junior Harriers who represented West Yorkshire in the National Sportshall Athletics Final in Birmingham. The U13 Boys team came 3rd overall which is a brilliant result. Daniel Judkowski competed in the shot with a distance of 9m.30 to give him 12th place. The U13 Girls team were 8th overall with both Elizabeth Heard and Chloe Tindale represented West Yorkshire. Elizabeth came 13th= in the 2 lap time trial with 24.3 secs and 4th in the Standing Triple Jump with 6m.53. Chloe came 16th= in the 4 lap time trial with 53.2 secs and 7th= in the High Jump with 1m.30. The U15 Girls team came 6th overall and Beth Pugh gained a 34th= individual placing. She was 12th= in the 2 lap time trial in 23.5 secs, 20th= in the Vertical Jump with 51cm and 23rd in the shot with 7m.28. Competition at this level is of the highest standard and the sheer experience of competing in such an event is one to be remembered. Congratulations to all.

 

Peco League 2 mile Junior XC Challenge Race,
Golden Acre Park, Sun 1st March

There was a fantastic turnout of 15 Junior Ilkley Harriers in this fourth race in the series at Golden Acre Park. Everyone ran very well and with lots of confidence. I was especially pleased at the way you all supported each other so well done. Sam Haggar won the race outright in 12.15, 3rd Jerome Martill (12.39), 5th Edward Bickerdike (13.08), 6th Stephen Clarke (13.10), 7th Georgia Malir (13.25), 8th Tom Bennett (13.35), 9th Anna Sinclair (13.37), 10th Sam Wood (13.40), 11th Sophie Latta (13.48), 12th Max Beesley (13.52), 13th Bradley Chapman (14.02), 15th Sarah Pickering (14.47), James Pickering (15.50), 17th Harriet Jackson (16.05) and Anna Pickering 19th in 22.00.

The Team

West Yorkshire Schools XC Championships, Sat 7th Feb

The Championships were held at Leeds Grammar School in snowy conditions. Nine Ilkley Harriers raced for either Bradford or the Leeds authority. In the Junior girls race Georgia Malir was 22nd in 12.45 (representing Leeds), Sophie Latta, 23rd in 12.46 and Anna Sinclair, 28th in 12.52, both representing Bradford. Leeds were 2nd in the team competition and Bradford 3rd. Three boys packed into 26th, 27th and 28th places for Bradford in the Junior Boys race - Josh Stephens (13.22), Sam Haggar (13.22) and Josh Crane (13.27). Brittany Tate competed for Bradford in the Intermediate Girls race finishing in 9th place in 14.51 and helping the team to 2nd place overall. Soreen Splash Junior Fell Quarry Runs, Sun 25th Jan

What a fantastic turnout from our juniors (17 in total) - and what fantastic racing. The U8 race was won by Logan Hargreaves-Madhas; 9th, Bethan Morley (and 1st girl); 12th, Evelyn Malir (2nd girl); 30th, Nina Pearce; 36th, Ben Morley; 37th Abigail Roche and 40th Georgia Weston. In the 1 mile race our first finisher was Sam Haggar, 9th overall in 8.27 (and 3rd U14); 12th Charles Smith (3rd U10) in 8.31; 13th Georgia Malir in 8.34 (2nd U14); 14th Ruaridh Mon-Williams in 8.35 (5th U12); 16th Edward Bickerdike in 8.38 (6th U12); 21st Sam Wood in 8.57 (5th U14); 44th Grace Malir in 10.05 (U12); 74th Esme Pearce in 12.36 (U10); 76th Julian Roche in 12.57 (U10) and Stephanie Hunter ran the 2 mile course in 21.42 (5th U16 girl). Well done to everyone racing for Ilkley and in partcicular those competing in their very first fell race and to those who made the leap to the 1 mile distance.

Peco League 2 mile Junior XC Challenge Race, John Smeaton School, Sun 11th January

Of the 21 juniors racing at this event 13 were Junior Ilkley Harriers. Ilkley's runners were: 3rd, Jerome Martill (13.38), 4th, Sam Haggar (13.51), 5th, Jack Cummings (14.03), 6th, Fiona Jordan (14.22), 8th, Harry Maslen (14.41), 9th, Edward Bickerdike (14.54), 10th, Georgia Malir (15.03), 11th, Bradley Chapman (15.11), 12th, Sam Wood (15.20), 14th, Grace Malir (16.05), 16th, Harriet Jackson (18.08), 17th, Lily Kitchen (18.32) and 20th, Anna Pickering in 22.50. There was some strong impressive running from so many of you - very well done.

Yorkshire XC Championships, Rotherham, Sat 10th January

Well done to the five juniors who raced at Rotherham in the Yorkshire XC Championships. Stephen Clarke (U15) was the only boy running, finishing in 40th place in 18.30. Four girls ran in the U13 race gaining 14th team place overall. Anna Sinclair was 24th in 13.10, Naomi Elliot, 43rd (13.55), Anna Tench, 57th (14.22) and Bea Bradley, 66th (14.57). Many thanks for all your hard work and commitment to racing this season.
