Hi Harriers,

Well if you thought last month was impressive there have continued to be some stunning performances by Ilkley Harriers this month!

It’s time to put forward your nomination(s) for the Harrier of the Month for May, both for running and volunteering. Have a look and put forward the name(s) of those who have impressed you with their running and/or with their contribution to the club. You can nominate either here on Facebook or by email to homnom@ilkleyharriers.org.uk. Please let us know your nominations by Friday 8th June.

Long distance running seems to have been the flavour of this month with 3 Ilkley Harriers completing the prestigious Bob Graham round, which involves running up 42 Lake District Peaks, involving 27,000ft of ascent over a distance of 66 miles, within an allotted time of 24 hours. Paul Carmen, Ben Shepherd and Dan Wilkinson were impressively successful in completing this.

Andrew Merrick completed the West Highland Way Challenge race in 28 hrs 54 mins, coming 30th out of a field of 70 finishers, with another 40 having to retire. This race involves completing the length of the West Highland Way route (95miles) in under 35 hours. Another amazing achievement.

Dick Waddington and Richard Joel completed the Old County Tops fell race, which must be run as a team of 2. This race involves covering a distance of 37 miles and approx. 10,000 feet of climbing. Again, an impressive race to complete, especially in view of the very hot running conditions on the day, which resulted in ¼ of the teams who entered not managing to finish.

Kate Archer had a fantastic race finishing 2nd lady at the Windermere marathon, completing this hilly road race in an impressive 3:19:33.

Also on the road this month, 8 Harriers completed the Leeds half marathon. Helen Thurston was the 1st Harrier home and 16th lady overall, Rhys Jones achieved a PB, completing the race in 1:34:14, as did Caroline Howe, who completed the race in 1:41:57. William Josling and Caroline Tong also completed this half marathon, impressive as it is just a year since they completed the Harriers 0-5km beginners course.

Back on the fells, Jack Wood, Rob Little and Jack Cummings took the 1st 3 places respectively at the Jack Bloor fell race (a counter in this year’s Harrier’s race league) and won the men’s team prize. Helen Wood (3rd lady overall), Kate Archer and Rachel Carter won the ladies team prize. Jack Cummings was also 1st U23 at this race, with Hilda Coulsley taking the 1st F60 place.

On the trails, the popular Up the Odda race took place, with Nathan Edmondson finishing an impressive 2nd in the 10km. Paul Castle and Robin Nicolson also had a great run, coming 1st in the duo race.

The Ilkley Trail race took place on Bank holiday Monday with many Harriers turning up to run their local race, another of this month’s counters in the Harrier’s race league. 3 Harriers managed to come in the top 10, with Jack Cummings coming in 3rd place, Cameron Reilly taking 4th place, Nathan Edmunson coming in 5th place and Istvan Jacso taking 8th place. Lucy Williamson continues to impress, finishing as 2nd lady at this race.

Ilkely Harriers continue to have a presence at the weekly park runs, with Jack Wood and Oscar Stapleton coming 1st at the Skipton Parkrun this month and Sally Malir coming 1st lady at Horton.

Congratulations to Jack Wood who was selected this month to represent Great Britain at the World Mountain Running Long Distance Championships to be held in Poland in June.

Congratulations also to Euan Brennan who has been selected to run for England in the International Mountain Running Youth Cup which takes place in Italy, in June also.

This list is by no means exhaustive and I am sure you have been impressed by others who do not appear in this summary.

We look forward to receiving your nominations!
Many thanks.
