The IH Fell -not so secret- society

Postby nikos » Thu Oct 11, 2012 12:50 pm

I was going to post this under the Harriers chat but as it s closely related to the winter offroad training I will post here!

You know me and how my mind chatters all the time for magical ideas and my passion for running (one day I ll win some races too ...I promise, might be an ultra but..)

Anyway back to the subject. I was happy to see the Tuesday off road group attracted more than a few people and I feel it might grow even bigger? So to celebrate the fact that there are runners that love running on te fells, mountains and trails throughout winter, in the dark and in any conditions (remember the head torch run on ice we did last year!!?) I thought it would be good to start a fell running society within IH, something like the Bedlamytes ...we can run, train hard, talk about history, poetry, love nature and enjoy the magic of the night. And of course we can have our outdoor socials too.

Down to Tuesday training now, I was thinking I should work on 10-12 offroad routes and start from 7-8 miles, when the team becomes stronger go up to 10 and before Christmas reach a 13-15 miler on a club night? If we have time of course. And it won t be all steady running, every route a different challenge, hillier, more technical, on snow perhaps (wishing for snow already)

What do you think IHers? What do you think team? Could this society be the start to new beginnings and getting to know our wild ourselves a bit better?

So next Tuesdays offroad run as soon as I map it!

I'm not sure that any division is necessary within the harriers. Lets just all enjoy the running and support everyone, road or fell!!

Jane why do you think that this idea would promote division? I see it more as something that would attract the more fell/offroad oriented members of the club to do more offroad training all year round. I have nothing against the harriers that prefer road running, I do run on roads too sometimes and come to your speed sessions. There were similar groups in the year I have been with the club, like the three peakers training group, never seen that creating any division. We all want to be strong runners running on our preferred surroundings. So no division at all my post implies...I have a big heart and hug for everyone.

Another thing is that running with other people on the trails I discovered that with many we share a love for nature and history, finding out what is the history behind this rock or this path etc that s why the idea. If I have created tension or offended anybody, I apologise. I am not a man of divisions or cliques or segregation.

Dave thank you.

I like the idea of promoting any running-related activity within the Club but above all we must make sure that no-one is put off doing anything, even by mistake.
Sure there's the odd relay where performance criteria are set, and groups of friends who run together informally, but otherwise we should not do anything that gives even the impression of things being closed, please.

I apologise, my intentions were pure. If deleting the post is appropriate let s please delete it and avoid any misunderstandings. Thank you all for your input and as a fairly new member perhaps I am allowed to fall into the trap speaking an idea out.
