"Winter gatherings.....16th October and 13 November"

Fellow Plebians,

The winter is almost upon us, time to look out the trendy winter running gear, unless you still insist in just wearing shorts and vest because you're 'ard !

To brighten up the winter months the royal 'we' will be hosting a series of gatherings, this isn’t a meeting of counter culture revolutionaries (like the first club I was in, plus we've already had a Bob Graham night !), nor is there forced participation, just in case you are an introverted runner who refrains from any notion of group activity, but it’s just a little get together to chew the fat over related running topics.

The format is the usual, pick a topic , any topic at all, come along after the Tues night run, enjoy the spread of food laid before you and join in the chat or just listen, you don’t even have to stand up and admit to your running addiction .....have I sold it to you, yes, well come along !

First session is on Tues 16th Oct, approx. 8.30pm location is the ILTCS room at the back, food supplied (includes chips, and we always hope there’s chips)
Subject matter is : Club Coaching
Meet up to talk about Life after LiRF. 10 Harriers have attended Leader in Running Fitness courses this year and will be putting their new skills to use for the Club. Come along to discuss what the course was like , how the Club can use those skills, what other coaching qualifications and courses are there. If you can help with coaching or have some suggestions on how the coaches could help you, come along!

Next session is 13th Nov,
Subject matter is : The return of vinyl – Does this reflect a need to return to a more tactile society as we are consumed into the iFamily and live a virtual life on Tubeface (or whatever it’s called)! …. perhaps not, it may focus on the Fell Championship races and provide the club captains an opportunity to get the ball rolling on the championship races.
For 2013 (yes, 2013, who would have thought!) any suggestions are welcome, please feel free to suggest any worthy topics, for Jan we may look to cover “Get ready for the spring marathon” as I’m sure many will be thinking “I need to get ready for a spring marathon”…..I think it merits a thumbs up !

Cheers

Here are my notes on the first 'gathering' of the season, that talked about Club coaching.
There was a good turnout of 20+ people, with representation from LiRF graduates, Committee members, those involved in coaching, and those just interested in talking about coaching in the Club.
There was quite a bit of discussion about Tuesday night runs, although the consensus is that this is not a 'coached' evening but consists of 'group runs', we thought there was scope for some sessions that offered a little more structure and maybe a programme of runs. But in the main people were looking for a steady/social run, as there is structured training available on other nights.
It was suggested that we try to present the runs in some logical order, maybe slow → fast; and that a white board or flip chart might help with this. And that we should revive another idea from the past, for each run leader to declare a regrouping point outside after the talk - more important now it's dark outside. I think that distils what we said about Tuesdays?
We talked about the coach training course hierarchy, and why we've settled on LiRF being the best foundation for coaches in the senior club, that possibly very few would go on to the much more intensive 'Coach in Running Fitness' course, but that there were many 'workshop' style courses for 'endurance coaches' that our coaches would benefit from after LiRF. We need to find some way of distilling and disseminating this course information.
There was an account from those who had been on the LiRF course of what it prepared you for, and the start of a discussion about how to deploy our LiRF graduates (and I reiterated the deal made with every LiRFer who has been funded by the Club and BAN, that they are expected to do something for the Club). Tasks discussed included assisting with the circuit training coach rota; helping with group runs on a Tuesday night including a slower headlamp off-road run, and a ladies starter group to feed in to Tuesday night. The new 15-18 group is already working.
It became apparent that we could not cover every aspect of this huge topic, but it was a good general discussion with many interesting points raised.
Posscript: Matt will be leading a sub-group before the next Committee meeting to develop some of the ideas raised and present some recommendations to the Committee.
That's just my brain-dump, if I've missed something important do post it here.
