Challenge!

Postby Paul » Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:21 am

Peter Shields and Nick Pearce start a great challenge this weekend with the Snowdon Race. As Peter says, "we were debating challenges for the Club's 25th year, and in a moment of madness we decided to enter the Snowdon Race, the Ben Nevis Race and Skiddaw. We also decided to cycle from Lands End to John o Groats. We start the challenge this Saturday with the Snowdon Race. We then start the cycling on the 16th August riding up to John o Groats then cycling back to Fort William to run the Ben Nevis race then get the train back home. We then finish off the challenge at the back end of September by running Skiddaw, all with the Ilkley Harriers vest on."
Fantastic!
Can anyone match that?

Pete Shields and Nick Pearce set off by car at 5:00 am yesterday (Tuesday) heading to Exeter and then train to Penzance, before cycling down to Lands End for the start of their epic 900 mile ride (+ another 175 miles back to Fort William for the Ben Nevis race). That's 4400' of climbing after nearly 1100 miles of cycling .

By the end of the day they had covered the first 40 miles of their journey to John O'groats, which they hope to do in 14 days.

Their second day they have seen off a further 75 hilly miles in continuous rain, proudly wearing their Harriers vests, before setting up camp on Dartmoor tonight. So 115 miles down and hoping for better weather tomorrow, and fewer hills!

Pete and Nick had a hard day over a very hilly Dartmoor yesterday, where there 65 miles takes them just short of the 200 mark. On Friday they hope to get beyond Bristol if all is kind to them

Message from Pete and Nick:

Monday - finally reached John O' Groats 1020 miles in 12 days 22 hours, after horrendous weather delayed their final miles :D

Congratulations on achieving this leg of their challenge, what an amazing pair

Now headed to Fort Weather for the Ben Nevis race - may be interesting trying to find their running legs after all that cycling

Good luck to them both on the next leg

Its the final leg of the Challenge this weekend.

Not Skiddaw as mentioned above, but the Sca Fell Pike Fell Race.

I'm going up with the chaps, primarily to give Pete some of my own particular brand of encouragement, to run with him and to keep him on the straight and narrow while Nick streaks off into the distance.

Talk about going from the sublime (CCC) to the ridiculous. ;)

Whatever, it will be great to be there at the completion of this particular venture.

Finish it off in style gents. :D

From Pete ... latest update on our 25th anniversary challenge. Pete and Nick visited their last 25th anniversary challenge today, Scafell Pike, the biggest climb in England. Scafell Pike situated in the Western Lake District, is one of the truly great classic fell/mountain races 4.5 miles in distance with 3000ft of climb. The two Ilkley Athletes very ably supported by Morgan Williams, an athlete not adverse to a challenge himself, finished in great style both top in their age groups. Nick, who is really on top of his game at the moment finished in 19th position giving him the first V55 prize. Peter, very ably supported by Morgan who finished a place in front of him, finished as first V60 in a quality field.
This race concludes the challenge they set themselves, inspired by the clubs 25th anniversary and some philosophical words spoken by Morgan to Peter earlier in the year, which charged the events.
Peter and Nick ran the Snowdon Mountain Race, distance 10miles in July, they then cycled from Lands End to John O Groats unsupported, camping rough, carrying all their own gear, a distance of 1,020 miles in 12 days 22hrs during August and September, cycled back down to Fort William and ran the Ben Nevis Mountain Race, technically the hardest race on the calender a distance of 10 miles, the conclusion being today's race of 4.5 miles.
Throughout the challenge Pete and Nick have literally flown the flag for Ilkley, the clubs pennant. Where ever they have been it has been flown on the back of Pete's bike, the result being numerous conversations in many dialects up and down the country about Ilkey Harriers.
Pete and Nicks challenge was a way of showing their appreciation to the club, which they have both been members of for numerous years. People have asked if there was some charitable motive behind what they have done, this was never the case but if there is strong enough feeling they would be happy to put their achievements to a cause of the clubs choosing. The boys did a total of 1230 miles, would a penny a mile be to much to ask if that was the case.
